B. H. Tharrington Primary students explored a variety of learning opportunities during Innovation Day 2018.

Students rotated to three different sessions; two science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) challenge experiences and one service session.

Some STEAM challenges included building famous landmarks using recycled materials and inventing designs that could fly using specific supplies and resources. Service sessions highlighted ways individuals can make their community a better place, including making bookmarks for guests to have when visiting the library and learning how Pike Electric linemen help the public after the effects of severe storms.

Many community guests helped make this event a success, the school system said. These guests included representatives from the Mount Airy Public Library, Pike Electric, Chick-fil-A, Mount Airy Police Department, Surry Community College, Mount Airy Middle School Band, and Vincent’s Legacy and the Kindness Challenge.
