Local Masons will reach a milestone Friday as Pilot Lodge #493 hosts its 40th annual barbecue.

Barbecue will be served from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m. or as long as supplies last at the lodge located on South Key Street.

Plates with 8 ounces of barbecue complimented by barbecue slaw, baked beans, a roll and two cookies will be prepared for dining in or take out. Barbecue sandwiches will also be available along with barbecue by the pound.

Cost for a plate is $9 while sandwiches are $4 and a pound of barbecue may be purchased for $9. Delivery will be available to the Pilot Mountain and King areas with the purchase of 10 plates or more.

The annual fundraiser received a boost last year when the lodge initiated a sponsorship program for the event. Local businesses and some individuals contributed between $100-250 to support the event.

“Last year we did well in getting sponsors,” noted lodge member and barbecue coordinator Michael Register. “This year we’ve done even better with 38 sponsors in place.”

Sponsors will be recognized at the lodge and on handouts accompanying each meal.

According to Register, Lodge #493 sold some 550 plates last year and was able to raise some $5,000. Those funds went toward their annual support of the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford, the Whitestone Masonic and Eastern Star Home in Greensboro and the Masonic Foundation. The lodge has already provided this year’s equal support thanks to an earlier successful fundraiser. Register noted that the lodge also actively supports local charities and community needs.

This year, Register said, the goal is to sell 650 plates. Proceeds from Friday will go toward the Lodge Building Fund.

“Over the years,” he added, “we’ve gotten great support from our community and now from our sponsors. We want to invite everybody to come out this Friday and support our lodge by enjoying a great meal.”
