Cruise in, motorcycle ride slated

The group Families In Need will host a cruise-in and motorcycle ride this weekend in an effort to raise funds to be used in helping area residents with need.

An annual spring cruise-in will take place from 11-5 in a large open field alongside NC Highway 89 East (Westfield Road) in the Westfield community. The site is located seven miles from Mount Airy and 1/8-mile from Watson’s Used Cars. Signs are posted to identify the location.

Owners of classic vehicles, including cars, trucks, tractors and motorcycles not participating in the concurrent bike ride are invited to come out for the free show. Vehicles will be registered at no charge as they arrive.

All participating vehicles, including motorcycles, will be registered for a pair of $50 door prizes to be awarded. Additional door prizes will also be given away throughout the afternoon.

Those not bringing a classic car are invited out to admire the vehicles and to enjoy a variety of planned activities including food, music, raffles and prize drawings.

The bluegrass band “The Shindiggers,” featuring popular local musicians Hersie McMillian, Jimmy Smith, Johnny Dearmin and Wendy Dearmin, will be performing from noon through 2 p.m.

Barbecue meals will be available throughout the afternoon along with hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks and desserts.

A pair of drawings will be held with tickets to be sold throughout the day. The popular 50/50 drawing will return and will also feature a lady’s diamond dinner ring courtesy of Hayes Jewelers.

The featured drawing, scheduled to be awarded around 4 p.m., will offer a top prize of a 380 John Deere 22 hp, 48” riding mower. Second prize will consist of a custom-made fire pit while third prize will be a Stihl Weed Eater. Tickets will be available throughout the day at a cost of $5 each or 5 for $20.

In the event of rain, activities will be moved to Sunday afternoon from 1-5.

Over almost a decade, the cruise-ins have become the group’s signature fundraising event.

An accompanying motorcycle ride will also be held during the day, with registration scheduled from 9-11 a.m. in the Big Lots parking lot in Mount Airy. Registration is $10 per person with proceeds to benefit the Families in Need group.

Riders will leave the Big Lots parking area at 11 a.m. Door prizes will be given away throughout the ride. Upon the group’s mid-afternoon arrival at the cruise-in, all participants will be greeted with a free meal.

According to group representative Grant Tilley, proceeds from the day will go toward providing Christmas gifts for area children with need as well as helping struggling residents with heating and utilities and helping to meet other needs in the community.

For additional cruise-in information, Tilley can be reached at 351-4235.
