Flinchums hold reunion

ARARAT — The Flinchum family annual reunion was held on June 28 at Homeplace Park in Ararat. This was for the descendants of the late William Henry Flinchum, his first wife Anna Key Flinchum, and his second wife Lula Denny Flinchum.

All the children of William and Anna have passed away. Only two of Henry and Lula’s children are living: Spencer Flinchum and Shirley Flinchum Simmons, along with two daughters-in-law, Frances Flinchum, wife of Spencer Flinchum, and Gaye Nell Flinchum, wife of the late Rex Flinchum.

Spencer, Frances, and their son, Edwin, were hosts for this year’s reunion. There was so much good food and desserts. The winners of the dessert contest were Shirley Simmons in first place with her amazing pineapple coconut cake, Brenda Pugh in second place with her 7up cake, and Patricia Shoffner in third place with her homemade cream filled oatmeal cookies. They each received a gift certificate to Walmart.

A very special family member was lost last year. Eva Flinchum, widow of the late Bert Flinchum, passed away on Dec. 7, 2014. Eva was a Christian lady, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dear friend to many. She will always be loved and missed.

Attendance was down a bit this year due to a wedding, sickness, and other issues. Those attending were: from Pilot Mountain, Spencer and Frances Flinchum and son Edwin, Randy and Joan Simpson and daughter Hannah, and Shirley Simmons; from Dobson, Dennis and Joy Smith; from Ararat, Gaye Nell Flinchum, Delana Shinault and daughter Lela; from Lewisville, Dan and Brenda Pugh; from Julian, Terry and Patricia Shoffner, Lucy Clapp, and Jean Clapp; from Rural Hall, Sean and Katie Flanagan; from Raliegh, Dan and Tammy Fox; from Burlington, Mitchell and Terry Flinchum; from Kernersville, Jennie West and son Ben, and Leeland Williams; and from Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Linda Murray.

A great time was had. Some of the young ones enjoyed playing in the pool.

Patricia Shoffner took lots of pictures and shared pictures of past reunions. She also had a new 2015 family roster for everyone. The family appreciates everything she does.

The hosts treated all local and out-of-town family to a catered meal on Saturday evening in the fellowship hall at Whitakers Chapel Church. The desserts were furnished by family members. Several family members attended only the dinner, including Amy Duggins and daughter Kaylee, of Clemmons, Sandy Dameron, of Pfafftown, Gordon and Kim Flanagan, of Rural Hall, Rene Summerlin of Julian, and Howard and Rebecca Miller of Burlington.

Those who were unable to attend were truly missed. Please pray for Wayne and Nancy Routh. Wayne is home, and Nancy is taking care of him.

The Elmer Flinchum family will be host for the 2016 reunion. Have a happy, healthy, and safe year.
