Pilot Mountain Elementary School recently welcomed Nicole Warren from the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium to give a presentation at the school.
Warren discussed animal adaptations and variations with fourth grade students. As the program began, students were asked to draw their first impressions about sharks. They were then introduced to the book “Sand Tiger Sharks.” After they read the book, Warren asked them to draw another picture about their new impressions of sharks. M
Warren will take the first set of drawings by the students and compare them to the second set of drawings to see if there are changes in their impressions after the book was read to them. In addition to the drawings, she will analyze the colors and descriptions that the students used.
Students also had given the opportunity to touch a Megalodon tooth and shark jaws. Each student was also given copy of the book to take home. Aquariums and wildlife centers have developed books to share on the site http://www.uniteforliteracy.com/.
