Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces.The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

The Memoral Day service at the Old Westfield School will be on May 29 at noon.

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine proudly announces that Kelsey Kapolka will receive the degree Doctor of Medicine. The Honors Day Ceremony for the graduating class of 2016 will be Saturday, May 28. Kelsey’s parents are Debbie and Jeff Kapolka. Kelsey’s grandmother’s are Martha Moorefield and Helen Kapolka.

Congratulations to Jacob Burwell! Jacob graduated from Salem Baptist Christian School Friday, May 20. Jacob will be attending The William States Lee College of Engineering in the fall. Jacob is the son of Kim and Becky Burwell. His grandmother is Mycleta Burwell.

The 1971 graduating class of East Surry High School held there class reunion last Saturday night. What a wonderful time it was!

Exciting news from Stoney Ridge! This year’s Vacation Bible School, “Submerged,” is coming on Saturday, June 18. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. This VBS is to encourage children to dive deeply into a new life through Jesus Christ. Our one-day program features great music, led by Katie Vestal, and entertaining, Christ-centered videos. The videos will capture the imagination of our guests. Fun activities will teach important lessons from the Bible. Make plans now to bring your children and/or grandchildren to VBS and enjoy our annual cook-out after the VBS.

Westfiled Baptist Church VBS Is June 20 through 24 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Kids Camp will be at the church July 18 through 21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Odell Alfred Sisk, age 80, of Pilot Mountain, went to his heavenly home on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at Forsyth Medical Center.

He was born on October 8, 1935 in Stokes County to the late Madison Sisk and Mary Lou Dalton Sisk.
