Seven selected East Surry JROTC cadets recently traveled to Oak Ridge Military Academy in Oak Ridge to participate in the annual Junior Cadet Leadership Challenge.
The East Surry cadets took part in the camp with cadets from 19 other area schools at the academy about seven miles northwest of the Greensboro airport.
According to 1st Sergeant Ronald Montgomery, East Surry JROTC instructor, the camp consisted of five challenging days filled with physical fitness training, obstacle courses, leadership reaction drills, rappelling, marksmanship, land navigation, water survival and STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) training.
East Surry cadets earning special recognition in competitive activities included Keith Myers, Top Squad STEM Score; Cameron Edwards, Top Individual Male Physical Training Score in the battalion; and Nicholas Montgomery, Top Individual Male Score in the company.
Cadet Joshua Pack earned multiple recognitions: Top Squad Land Navigation Score, Fastest Individual Obstacle Course Time and Best Water Survival Time. Pack graduated the course as a Distinguished Honor Cadet.
“All of the East Surry cadets presented themselves in manner which brought great credit upon themselves, the Corps of Cadets, East Surry and Surry County School System,” said Montgomery.
