PILOT MOUNTAIN — Surry County authorities were still on the lookout Saturday for a suspected shooter they considered armed and dangerous, after a Friday evening shooting sent one man to the hospital.

Law enforcement officials, however, would not release the name of the shooter, saying they felt area residents were safer not know the name.

The shooting occurred Friday, when two men law enforcement officials say knew one another became involved in a confrontation.

Surry County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting at 1367 Carson Road in Pilot Mountain on Friday. The victim was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where he’s receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

According to Surry County Sheriff’s Lt. David Hamlin, the shooting resulted from some sort of altercation between the two men. Hamlin said there may have been some record of assault between the two. He stressed the shooting was not a random act of violence and the two men knew each other.

After responding to the shooting, which occurred at 5:16 p.m. on Friday, deputies found one man who had been shot in the right leg with a small-caliber handgun, according to Hamlin. Hamlin said the victim in the shooting was still recovering at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center as of Saturday morning.

According to Hamlin, the suspect in the shooting has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and a warrant has been issued for the man’s arrest. Hamlin also said all surrounding law enforcement agencies have been notified and the man’s name is now in a national database identifying him as having a warrant for his arrest.

According to King Police Sgt. Dallas Hale, his department did receive a tip the shooting suspect was at a hotel in King Friday night. However, King Police did not locate the suspect at the site. Hale said his department has received no further leads in the search but remains on the lookout for the suspect.
