The local edition of this year’s March for Babies, March of Dimes biggest annual fundraising event, will be Saturday at Veterans Park in Mount Airy.
“March for Babies is a day to celebrate and honor babies. Funds raised help March of Dimes fund research and community programs for healthy moms and strong babies,” said Traci George of WorkForce Unlimited, who is serving as the event chairperson.
Mount Airy area families, businesses and volunteers dedicated to the fight for the health of all moms and babies take part in March for Babies.
“We already have teams, and they’ve been hard at work raising funds,” said George. “The public can show up, make a donation and enjoy the 3.5 mile walk which starts at 10 a.m. We’ll begin the introductions at 9:30 or 9:40 a.m. but we’ll open up at 9 a.m.”
The walk along the greenway will start and end in Veterans Park, according to George.
“There will be food, drinks, a bouncy house and music will be provided by B-Dazzle Productions’ Blanton Youell,” George added.
The fundraising goal for Saturday’s event is $60,000 and George says they are on track to meet the mark.
“We’re not there yet, but we’re on track. We’ll have a better idea on Saturday.”
George said another event later in the month will count toward the March for Babies fundraising total.
“The Will Jones Band is donating their time and talent for a concert at Cross Creek Country Club’s Pavilion on Saturday, May 26, from 7:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. There is a $10 cover charge and all of the proceeds will go to March of Dimes,” said George.
The 2018 Ambassadors for the event are the Haynes family.
“Kesson Steven Haynes was born prematurely, and his family received services from the March of Dimes. Every year, we choose an Ambassador, and this year it is the Haynes family,” said George.
March for Babies is sponsored nationally by Kmart, Famous Footwear, Macy’s, HCA, Cigna, Pampers and regional sponsor Publix Super Markets Inc.
Locally, March for Babies is sponsored by Carolina Carports, Coram Construction, Workforce Unlimited and Nester Hosiery Inc.
“Jamie Southern (March of Dimes staff member) has been tremendous to work with,” said George, “and I want to thank her, all our ELT members, sponsors and walkers for all of their support.”
