DOBSON — A 12-year teacher in the Surry County Schools system was recently selected to fill the position of assistant principal at Central Middle School.

The Surry County Board of Education held a retreat and a meeting last week, and from those sessions chose to appoint Kara Martin to the post.

Martin’s 12 years in the county school system began when she became a math teacher at North Surry High School in 2005. Over her career at North Surry, she served as a member of the school improvement team and math department chairperson.

She was also a mentor teacher and a swim coach. At the district level, she worked on a team to create 9-12 math curriculum benchmarks.

“I am excited that Ms. Martin is joining our staff and I look forward to working with her as she begins a career in school administration,” said Central Middle principal Bill Goins.

Prior to joining the Surry County district, Martin received a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Mathematics Education from Appalachian State University in 2005. She went on to earn a Masters in School Administration from High Point University in 2012.
