For those who like working with their hands and want to learn a new skill that can be used as a career or hobby, Surry Community College will be offering upholstery classes starting soon at The Pilot Center, 612 E. Main St., Pilot Mountain.
Class Instructor Larry Haynes described the course by saying, “We give old stuff new life, and make new things even better. This class is interactive and great for beginners; 99 percent of students don’t even know how to sew at the beginning of the course.”
Three class sessions will be starting in February. The first will meet Feb. 13 through June 7 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.. The second will meet Feb. 14 through June 1 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.. The third will meet Feb. 14 through June 1 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Participants are encouraged to bring their upholstery project and learn to tear down a piece of upholstered furniture or automotive seat; then, completely restore it by repairing or rebuilding the frames, replacing parts, and selecting and replacing fabric. This is an entirely hands-on class that requires lifting and the use of sewing machines and cutting tools.
Advance registration and payment of $183 are required. Call (336) 386-3618 for more information.
