At its Dec. 5 monthly meeting, the Pilot Mountain Ruritan Club installed officers for the upcoming year.
Officers elected for 2017 were Dave O’Reilly as president, Larry Finney as vice president, Mary Finney as secretary and Wanda Fulk as treasurer. Board members for the new year were Owen Fulk, Spencer Flinchum and Donna Sutphin.
The club is active throughout the year in numerous fundraisers and community projects. The club is well known locally for hosting biannual chicken and oyster stews each March and November. Funds raised are returned into the community through projects and the funding of a Surry Community College scholarship through The Pilot Center.
Other projects include a community garden , support of the Pilot Mountain Outreach Center, support of the Pilot Mountain VFW and Ladies Auxiliary and contributions to local schools.
“We also try to help any individuals with need,” noted Treasurer Wanda Fulk, “especially the elderly. We try to help wherever we see a need.”
Organized in the mid-1970s, the club currently has some 15 active members. The stated purpose of the Pilot Mountain Ruritan Club is “to enhance the quality of living for the total community.”
