ROTC team takes second, advances

The East Surry High School JROTC Raider team traveled to Fred T. Foard High School on Saturday, Nov.5, to compete against other top teams from the region in the school’s annual JROTC meet.

The day was a successful one for the East Surry team, finishing second overall in a field of 16 teams to secure a place in the upcoming Best of the Best Raider Championship, scheduled to take place in March.

At the Foard High School event, teams competed in a Modified Army Physical Fitness Test, a 2-minute sit-up test, a 2-minute push-up test, a mile run, a 5-kilometer run/walk, a Humvee Pull, the Litter Carry and the Rope Bridge,

With A-team Captain Bradley Snow unable to compete due to an ankle injury, Mark Calderon stepped up and led A-team to its second place finish. The team placed second in the test, second in the 5-kilometer run, and first in Litter Carry.

The A-team Raiders are interim captain Mark Calderon, Jackson Allen, Erik Barron, Douglas Moore, Aubrey Mabe, Jakwon Thompson, Steven Williams, Tucker Mackie and Ashlyn Nagel.

The East Surry B-Team also made a strong showing, finishing eighth out 16 teams. East Surry B-team consists of Captain Robert Hawks, Cameron Truban, Dylan Mcconkey, Samy Chavez, Samantha Laws, Joshua Westmoreland, Michael Friend, Michael Bonilla and Mason Litteral.
