Motorcycle wreck claims Pilot Mountain man

One man is dead, and a woman was transported in critical condition after two unrelated traffic accidents Thursday night.

Alfred Lee Ladd, 62, of Ararat-Long Hill Road in Pilot Mountain was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident Thursday evening after the motorcycle he was riding was struck by a vehicle “approaching from the rear,” according to Surry County EMS Director John Shelton.

Shelton said EMS personnel were dispatched to the scene just north of where South Main Street intersects U.S. 52 at 9:50 p.m. Thursday. Ladd had been travelling north on the highway when his motorcycle was struck.

“He was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Shelton, before saying Ladd had been thrown from the bike when it was struck.

Shelton had no further information regarding the vehicle which struck Ladd, and authorities from the N.C. Highway Patrol could not immediately be reached for comment.

At 8:53 p.m., less than an hour prior to the incident in which Ladd was killed, emergency personnel had responded to another accident involving a two-wheeled vehicle on Round Peak Church Road.

Shelton said the scooter Zoey Phelps, 45, was riding was reportedly struck by a vehicle Megan Brown, 26, was driving.

Phelps was flown from a landing zone at the former Beulah school to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, according to Shelton. She was in critical condition at the time she was flown to Wake, but is expected to recover from her injuries.
