Local golfers are invited to sign up for a day on the links this Saturday as Hemlock Golf Course hosts the Gage Edwards Golf Tournament Memorial Fundraiser.

Play will begin at 8:30 a.m. with all proceeds going toward helping to send a young person to the Young Life of the Foothills summer camp.

Golfers will tee off for a shotgun start with four-player teams competing in a Captain’s Choice format. No advance registration is required. An entry fee of $50 per person and $200 per team includes one mulligan. Snacks, water and soft drinks will be provided.

Play will be divided into two levels with an A-flight featuring players with a handicap of 49 and below. B-flight play will feature players with a handicap of 50 and above. Players age 59 and younger will use the blue tees while players age 60-69 will use white tees and men over 70 and all ladies will use the red tees.

Cash prizes will include $300 for the first place team in each flight, $200 for the second place team in each flight and $100 for the third place finishers in each flight. Prizes will also be given for the longest drive and on a par 3 hole. A 50/50 drawing will be held with tickets available throughout the event.

The tournament is being organized with help from friends by Dallas Edwards, grandfather of the late Gage Edwards. A star athlete and popular student at East Surry High School, Gage Edwards died on Feb. 2, 2015, at the age of 17, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

“The camp meant a lot to Gage,” Dallas Edwards said. “While he was at camp, he gave his life to the Lord and a counselor who had talked to him spoke at his funeral. I was impressed with the counselor and with the camp. I’d like to see more young people get to go.”

Hemlock Golf Course is located at 1872 Power Dam Road, Walnut Cove. It can be reached by phone at 336-591-7934 or Edwards can be reached at 336-985-4676.
