DOBSON — The Surry Community College Board of Trustees and the Surry County Board of Education met on Thursday evening to celebrate the holiday season, their continuing educational partnership and the service of Robert F. Comer to the College Board of Trustees, who recently announced his retirement from the board.

Comer joined the Board of Trustees, as an appointee of the Surry County Board of Education, in 1998 and is resigning this year. Surry County Board of Education Chairman Earlie Coe honored Comer by stating, “On behalf of the Surry County Board of Education, I want to thank Bob Comer for his exemplary leadership and dedication to the promotion and fulfillment of excellence in public education.” School Board members Mamie Sutphin, Dr. Terri Mosley, Clark Goings, Brian Moser, and Superintendent of Surry County Schools, Dr. Travis Reeves, joined Coe as he presented Comer with a crystal engraved clock recognizing his seventeen years of service.

Comer has a deep appreciation for education having grown up in a household where both parents were teachers with his father later serving as Superintendent of Surry County Schools. Comer was away from Surry County for 25 years during his military service. He is quick to comment that in his estimation, the very best thing to happen during his absence was the establishment of Surry Community College. In representing public schools during his Board of Trustees tenure, he has been an advocate for Surry County students who have an opportunity to receive a valuable education.

In addition to Comer’s service to the local community college board, his dedication and support of Surry Community College led him to the North Carolina Association of Community College Trustees where he served as an association board member for twelve years, six of those in leadership roles, culminating with his chairmanship of the association from 2012-2014.

Dr. Ann Vaughn, chair of the SCC Board of Trustees and College President Dr. David Shockley presented Comer with a plaque highlighting his service to the SCC Board of Trustees. Earlie Coe then announced that the Surry County Board of Education had appointed Gene Rees to the College Trustee Board to fill Comer’s term that ends in 2018.

Dr. Vaughn then recognized Ginger Wilkins who began her board service in October. Current college trustees and former trustees enjoyed the opportunity to discuss the work of the college and its legacy of excellence in serving Surry and Yadkin counties since 1964.
