As a result of a collaborative extended reading assignment, the third grade students of Pilot Mountain Elementary School donated money to help neglected and abused animals in their community.
This past November, students were busy developing written proposals for research and presentations based on the following question: “How can someone help a person in need?”
In collaborative teams, students created a project plan, performed research using print and digital sources, and developed presentations using multi-media avenues, according to Amy Harpe, media coordinator for Pilot Mountain Elementary School.
Presentations were given within each group. One project from each of four classrooms was chosen as a finalist.
Following additional presentations before their classmates, the winning project was chosen by the entire third grade. “The students were passionate and demonstrated their commitment toward helping others,” said Harpe.
