DOBSON — Summertime for college students is often associated with a much needed break from classes, but Surry Community College is offering several technical classes starting this month to help students work at their own pace and excel in their programs of study.
The college has scheduled more than 20 technical courses this summer in a variety of settings; students can take classes on the Dobson campus, at The Yadkin Center, or online. The classes offered encompass a vast array of industries including, but not limited to, air conditioning, heating and refrigeration technology, automotive systems technology, collision repair and refinishing, electrical systems technology, machining, and welding.
Many students studying at Surry are also working part- or full-time. By taking a required class in the summer, one can alleviate some of the pressure associated with scheduling conflicts during the fall and spring semesters.
“Additionally, many critics argue that a long gap between classes, such as a summer break, can contribute to a loss in learning; enrolling in summer classes eliminates the gap associated with learning loss between spring and the following fall semester, and potentially prevents students taking summer courses from forgetting as much class material,” the college said in a statement released announcing the summer courses.
High school juniors and seniors also can utilize Surry’s summer offerings to their advantage by enrolling in one of the summer courses available through the Career and College Promise program. This program allows high school students to begin their college studies tuition free, and doing so in the summer would mean the student wouldn’t also be burdened by traditional high school courses and afterschool activities. The program’s technical classes starting this month include industrial safety, machining technology III, GMAW (MIG) plate/pipe, welding metallurgy, and text entry and formatting.
Registration for summer classes at Surry is open. Classes began May 22.
