PILOT MOUNTAIN — The Pilot Mountain Police Department hosted the third annual National Night Out last Tuesday night, drawing a large crowd for an evening of free food, fun and fellowship with area police, fire and rescue personnel.

Highlights included a dunking booth manned by Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson, a Mount Airy Police Department DWI-simulation pedal car, fingerprint identification kits and demonstrations by Pilot Mountain Police Department mountain bike patrol officers.

Hot dogs and drinks were provided free of charge by Dickie Crump, owner of The Sandwich Shop. The location also served as host site for the event.

“I couldn’t believe the crowd,” said Sgt. R.D. Bingman of the Pilot Mountain Police Department. “This was the best turn-out we’ve had yet.

“This was a good night for the community,” Bingman continued. “It helps people to realize they can talk to us. It gives them confidence in law enforcement and what we do to help them.”
