Auditions will be held Monday and Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Andy Griffith Playhouse, 218 Rockford St., Mount Airy. Call backs will be held on Tuesday following auditions.
Directed by Joey Marion with musical direction by Jane Tesh, the Surry Arts Players will be putting their unique spin on this popular musical. The SAC will be casting for singers, dancers, singers/dancers, technicians and orchestra members.
Performers do not need to be able to sing and dance to be cast — singers will sing, and dancers will dance. Cast members should have strong improvisational skills. Parts are available for teens through adults, and the SAC will also be casting eight to 10 children ages 10 to 12. Children under age 10 with training or performance experience are invited to audition.
Casting will be decided by an audition committee comprised of production staff and invited professionals.
For the auditions, singers should prepare 16 to 32 bars of a song to demonstrate vocal range and preferred style — from character, operatic, jazz or rock. Dancers should bring dance shoes and be prepared to learn a combination; gymnastic skills are a plus. All performers should be prepared to learn a small movement combination. If a person has physical limitations, he or she may be excused or his or her movement will be adapted to accommodate the person. Any person interested in being a technician or a musician should come to either audition night to express the desired interest to the production staff. Any person who is a musician, the musical director may ask people to play. Those who would like to look at the music to determine if it is appropriate for the individual should contact the production staff before auditions.
If cast in the musical, people are entitled to a scholarship to attend the summer dance intensive, held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in June and July from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Andy Griffith Playhouse. These classes will build technique and movement skills. These classes are not required, but are highly recommended.
Rehearsals will be held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights. Further rehearsals may be added as needed. Some rehearsals will only require certain cast members. Performances are scheduled for Aug. 7 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., Aug. 8 at 3 p.m., and Aug. 9 at 7 p.m.
