The camp will run from Aug. 25 through Oct. 20, emphasizing skills including throwing, fielding, catching, infield play and agilities. Sessions will be held at the East Surry Little League Field (Armfield Center field #4) beginning at approximately 5:15 each Tuesday and Thursday evening and continuing until dark.
According to Kiser, a 20-year coaching veteran, the camp is intended for youths who have reached at least the “kid pitch” level of Little League play. The camp is not intended for any youngsters who are taking part in fall league play. Sign-ups will be limited to 20 to 25 youths.
In addition to skills, drills, agilities and competitions, youngsters will have the opportunity to take part in both games and game situations. Kiser will be assisted by selected East Surry students. Cost for the camp, which will include 34 hours of training, is $65 per youth.
“Last year was our first camp,” Kiser said, “and we were pleased with the results. I feel it was a big success for the kids who participated. They seemed to get a lot out of it.
“We do this,” he continued, “to help kids learn the basic fundamentals of the game with some friendly competition and to help boost the confidence level of the ballplayer. We’ll put them into game situations so that they’ll know what to do. The more they become familiar with a situation the more the game becomes instinct to them and they don’t have to rely on a coach telling them what they need to do.”
