Allen was in the Boy Scouts where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1947 in Perrysburg, Ohio, and Bowling Green State University in 1954 in Bowling Green, Ohio, with a B.S. in education. He also attended Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz., for spectroscopy certification. He was a member of the high school concert and marching band, American Legion Band in Bowling Green, and V.F.W. Band in Fostoria, Ohio. He taught sciences and mathematics in York Township and Montpelier, Ohio. Allen later worked as a laboratory technician supervisor with M&T Chemicals in Detroit, Mich., technical representative with Udylite Corp. and M&T in Connecticut, Maine, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi and lastly Michigan until he retired in 1991. After moving to Pilot Mountain in 1991, he joined the First United Methodist Church. Allen served as chairman on the United Way and was active in the Habitat for Humanity.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Juanita Gibbs Henderson of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey A. and Mary Ann Henderson of Raleigh and Todd L. and Susan Henderson of Caledonia, Mich.; two daughters and son-in-law, Tamara H. Atwater of Winston-Salem and Faye Marie and Donald Sparks of Frisco, Texas; and eight grandchildren, Michael (Bethany) Henderson, Laura Henderson, Charity and Megan Atwater, Christine and Andrea Sparks and Dylan and Emily Henderson.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 11, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Yow and the Rev. Sidney Lanier. The family will receive family and friends immediately following the service.
