Team members rose early on Saturday morning, Sept. 30, as the East Surry High School JROTC Raiders traveled to North Iredell High School to compete in the school’s annual Raider Meet.
A Raider Meet is described as a competition designed to test mental and physical fitness.
Members compete as a team in five events beginning with the Modified Army Physical Fitness Test. The test is made up of two minutes of push-ups, sit-ups and a one-mile run.
Other events are a team 5- kilometer run, the Rope Bridge, a humvee pull and a litter carry.
The Rope Bridge event consists of constructing a bridge from one pole to another pole placed fifty feet apart. Each team must then attempt to get all of members across the “bridge” without any penalties (no one touching the ground) in the fastest time.
The East Surry Raiders traveled with three teams, designated A, B, and C teams.. The A team placed first overall among the 12 teams taking part. They placed first in the Rope Bridge, litter carry and the fitness test. The East Surry B team placed sixth out of the 12 teams, The team’s top finish was in the 50-yard humvee pull (10,000 pounds) with a time of 32 seconds, putting them in third place.
The C team did not compete in the meet but cheered and supported their East Surry teammates.
Afterwards, both Raider team captains spoke well of their respective team’s efforts while noting that each still had opportunities for improvement.
“As a new team and with this being our first Raider meet,” noted B-team Captain Cameron Truban, “I think we did the best of our ability even having a lot of freshmen learning the ropes on how we do things in the Raiders. I personally think we could’ve worked better as a team on the litter course.”
“I personally think we did the best we could have done at this meet,” A-team Captain Erik Barron said. “Everybody gave it their all and no one quit. I think what we need to work on is getting stronger as a team and communicating better.”
The Raiders voiced appreciation to this season’s sponsors: Hodges Realty, Simmons Nissan, Pilot Mechanical, Pilot Rack, Carolina Carports and New Atlantic Contracting. These businesses are providing the Raiders with food, transportation, apparel, equipment and meet entry fees.
The East Surry Raider’s next meet will be at home on Nov. 4, from 8 a.m.–2 p.m.
