Surry Starfish capture aquatic awards

Members of the Surry County Special Olympics swim team recently competed at the Summer Games.
The Surry Starfish relay team of Jill Kelley, Hiatt Nester, Travis Powell and Tabitha Reynolds take the silver medal.

CARY — Members of the Surry Starfish recently competed in the Special Olympics Summer Games held at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary. The two-day meet featured more than 300 athletes from counties around North Carolina.

“All of our athletes had an outstanding meet,” said Starfish coach Cathy Cloukey. “It was an exciting event and they proudly represented Surry County.”

Individually for Surry, Chance Casstevens took bronze in the 25 yard freestyle and 25 yard backstroke. Katie Gibson took home a gold medal in the 15 yard unassisted swim while capturing silver medals in the 10 yard unassisted swim and 25 yard floatation swim. Jacob Groff captured a gold medal in the 100 yard freestyle while adding a silver medal in the 50 yard breaststroke and bronze in the 50 yard freestyle.

Team captain Neil Joyner added to the Starfish medal total with a silver in the 25 yard backstroke along with bronze medals in both the 25 yard freestyle and 50 yard freestyle.

Jill Kelley took home a bronze medal in the 25 yard backstroke and finished fourth in the 25 yard freestyle and fifth in the 50 yard freestyle.

Hiatt Nester contributed to the Starfish medal tally by earning gold in the 25 yard freestyle and bronze in the 50 yard freestyle. Nester also finished fourth in the 25 yard backstroke.

Travis Powell turned in an outstanding meet finishing with gold medals in both the 25 yard freestyle and 50 yard freestyle while adding a silver medal in the 25 yard backstroke. Tabitha

Reynolds won silver in the 25 yard backstroke and bronze in the 50 yard freestyle. She also added a fifth place finish in the 25 yard freestyle.

In addition to the outstanding individual performances, the Starfish had a strong showing in the 100 yard freestyle relay with the team of Jill Kelley, Hiatt Nester, Travis Powell, and Tabitha Reynolds taking the silver medal. “Our team members really performed well and had a tremendous meet,” added Cloukey.
