WESTFIELD — The Rock House Ruritan Club will host a pinto bean and hot dog supper on Saturday evening at the Rock House Ruritan Community Building, located five miles east of Pilot Mountain at 2889 N.C. 268. The supper will be followed by a community auction, with proceeds from both events to benefit Nancy Reynolds Elementary School.

According to Rock House Ruritan Club Secretary Nancy Speaks, funds raised during the evening will target the school’s backpack program. The program provides a backpack of nutritional food for children with need to take home each weekend.

“A lot of programs have been cut,” Speaks said, “and that’s having an effect on the school and on students. We’ve had some teachers tell us that the backpack program is an important way to make sure some students have enough to eat during the weekend.”

The meal will begin at 6 p.m. and will consist of pinto beans, slaw, cornbread, hot dogs, drinks at dessert at a cost of $5 per plate.

The supper will be followed at 7 p.m. by an auction of numerous items donated by area businesses and individuals.

“We have a lot of nice things that have been donated,” Speaks noted. “That includes gift certificates and valuable items from local businesses as well as some good stuff from local residents.”

In addition to the benefit fundraiser, the club has pledged to donate $200 worth of school supplies to Nancy Reynolds Elementary.

“We’ve been donating school supplies every year for years now,” Speaks said. “But this is the first year we’ve done a benefit. This school means a lot to us. Several of us attend Nancy Reynolds growing up. And it means a lot to me personally. My great aunt, Sally Tilley, was the first person to graduate from the school.

“It’s another good way for us to help in our community,” she continued, “and to provide an opportunity for the community to come together.”
