Pilot Mountain Elementary School kindergarten students recently took a trip to Horne Creek Farm in Pinnacle to learn how farmers lived a century ago.
This field trip aligned with student curriculum which involves learning about how the past is different from today. Students participated in hands-on activities such as learning how to peel apples with an apple machine and shucking and grinding corn.
Students were then able to eat the apples and feed the ground corn to the chickens. They also used the corn cobs to make a game called “corn cob darts” where students put a feather on the shucked corn cob and tossed them into hoops like lawn darts.
“The students also had time to enjoy a picnic-style lunch on the farm. Kindergarten teachers Lauren Schwartz, Kim Bowman, and Haley Holmes enjoyed watching their students learn about all of the wonderful things Horne Creek Farm had to offer,” the school said.
