Registration is going on now for the Surry Old Time and Traditional Music Camp at Surry Community College in Dobson.

Children ages 8 through 14 with an interest in learning a musical instrument, singing or dancing will find a world of fun in the camp held July 24-28 from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Camp participants will embark on a weeklong journey exploring Surry County’s old-time music heritage as they learn the basic playing techniques of the fiddle, banjo, guitar or mandolin, as well as how to sing songs in the traditional American, old-time, and country genres.

Students may also receive instruction in square dancing. The week of exciting, immersive lessons will culminate in a performance on the final day. A fee of $50 is required and covers the cost of instrument rental and a camp T-shirt.

The deadline to register is July 10. For questions and registration, contact Sonnie Hardy at (336) 386-3229 or hardysc@surry.edu. If you would like to see pictures and videos from last summer’s camps, go to Facebook @surrypersonalenrichment.
