VFW recognizes student essays


Commander Harlan Hawks and VFW Auxiliary President Margie Nichols award Abigail Wall for her Voice of Democracy essay.


Zeke Harrison was recognized by Commander Harlan Hawks and VFW Auxiliary President Margie Nichols for his Patriot’s Pen essay.


Two students were recognized during the brief joint business session at the January meeting of Pilot Mountain VFW Post 9436 and VFW Auxiliary.

Zeke Harrison presented his Patriot’s Pen essay titled “What Freedom Means to Me.” He was presented a Certificate of Appreciation and monetary gift from VFW Auxiliary President Margie Nichols. Commander Harlan Hawks also presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation, a monetary gift, and a backpack with school supplies.

A six-grader at Millennium Charter Academy in Mount Airy, Zeke is on the middle school basketball team and serves in Student Government. He is the son of Deana and Kevin Harrison, of Pilot Mountain. Ronnie and Penny Jessup of Westfield and Larry and Sharon Stone of Westfield are the proud grandparents. Great grandparents are Clyde and Boots Flippen of Asbury and Keith and Nancy Harrison and Daneese Harrison of Meansville, Ga. Clyde is a veteran from World War II.

Abigail Wall presented her Voice of Democracy essay titled “My Vision for America.” VFW Auxiliary President Margie Nichols presented her with a Certificate of Appreciation and monetary gift and Commander Harlan Hawks also presented her with a Certificate of Appreciation, a monetary gift, and a backpack with school supplies.

Abigail is 17 years old and an eleventh grade student at Calvary Christian School in King. She enjoys piano, reading, writing, and cheerleading. Abigail is the daughter of Terry and Annette Wall, of Ararat. Proud grandparents are Mary Jane Key and Bobby Bowman.
